Importing red light therapy devices involves more documentation than most wellness products: electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility, materials compliance and — depending on the market and claims — medical device registration. Getting the paperwork wrong is the most common cause of delayed launches.
This guide covers what the certificates mean, what buyers typically need in major markets, and how to plan certification into your schedule.
What the main certificates actually mean
- FDA Class II (510(k) listed) — US registration for devices intended for therapeutic use. Class II listing indicates the device has been cleared through the FDA's 510(k) pathway.
- CE — European conformity marking. The device meets applicable EU directives for health, safety and environmental protection.
- FCC — US electromagnetic compatibility for electronic products, covering emissions and immunity.
- RoHS — restricts hazardous substances (lead, mercury and others) in electrical components.
- ETL — third-party electrical safety certification, present on selected panels in our range.
- ISO 9001 / ISO 13485 — manufacturing quality management, with 13485 specific to medical devices.
What buyers typically need by market
Requirements depend on how the product is positioned and sold in each market. The table below reflects what our buyers commonly request — always confirm final requirements with your own regulatory advisor or importer, as rules change and interpretation varies by product claims.
- United States: FDA Class II 510(k) listing for therapeutic claims; FCC and RoHS documentation regardless.
- European Union / UK: CE marking with the applicable directive documentation; UKCA in the UK market.
- Australia: electrical safety compliance (SAA documentation); therapeutic claims fall under TGA rules — confirm claim wording carefully before listing.
- Canada, Latin America, Japan and others: market-specific certificates such as PSE (Japan) or ANATEL (Brazil), typically arranged per market.
Documents to request from your supplier
Before production starts, ask for:
- Certificate copies with the product model number visible on them
- Test reports behind the certificates — not just the badges
- Technical data: wavelengths used, wavelength tolerance, irradiance measurement method, flicker and EMF test results
- Declaration of conformity or equivalent statements for the target market
- Labeling artwork with the required marks and warnings for your market
A supplier who measures every batch with a solar power meter and a spectrometer, and holds LED tolerance to ±5nm, should have these on hand. Our own test data — including flicker and EMF results, with EMF below the 3 mG threshold at normal use distance — is available on request. See the quality control page for details.
Plan certification before production, not after
The most common scheduling mistake is ordering production first and starting certification later. Additional market certificates typically take 4–8 weeks to arrange. If your market needs one, start it in parallel with the sample stage so it does not hold up your launch.
Typical schedule for reference:
- Samples: ordered from stock, delivered for evaluation
- Certification: 4–8 weeks where required, run in parallel
- Production: 20–30 days for OEM bulk after sample sign-off, with weekly production photos
- Shipping: sea 25–35 days, air 5–7 days, with DDP terms available for the US, EU, UK, AU and CA
Labeling and claims
Registration follows the claims you make, not just the hardware: describing a device as therapeutic usually triggers medical device pathways, while general wellness positioning uses different rules. This is why the wording on your packaging and listings matters as much as the certificates themselves. Decide this early with your regulatory advisor.
A practical supplier checklist
- Can the supplier name the certificate holder and show the model numbers?
- Do they provide raw test reports on request?
- Can they produce market-specific certificates, and how long does it take?
- Do their production timelines include certification, or is it treated as an afterthought?
- Do they support the shipping terms and destination your channel needs?
