Pet wellness is one of the fastest-growing segments in the light therapy market. Devices for dogs, cats and horses now appear across retail, veterinary, rehabilitation and e-commerce channels — and for suppliers, the range of product formats is broad enough that format selection matters as much as the technology inside.
This guide covers the five pet light therapy formats, when each makes sense, and the technical decisions behind them.
1. Mats and beds: rest-in-place products
A mat or bed works while the animal lies on it — the format with the least behavior change for the animal. Typical specifications: 660nm red and 850nm near-infrared wavelengths, 50,000+ hour LED lifespan, and multi-mode controllers with timers and intensity settings.
Choose this format for home-use products and retail channels where owners want a daily-routine device. It suits dogs and cats that settle easily. See the current platform: pet light therapy mats & beds.
2. Joint contour wraps: localized coverage
Wraps are shaped to follow joints and legs, where a flat mat cannot make contact. Flexible wrap-style construction with hook-and-loop fastening keeps the device positioned during a session.
Choose this format for targeted products — knee, elbow and leg coverage for dogs, or equine limb applications. A 55W equine leg wrap is a typical flagship for the horse market. See joint contour wraps.
3. Flexible therapy belts: back and hip coverage
Belts wrap the torso for back (ridge) and hip coverage, or extend into full-length body wraps. Power levels range from daily-use belts to professional devices at 100W/m² LED power, and premium belts can carry extended warranties such as the 3-year coverage on the HSY-PET2001.
Choose this format for larger animals and professional channels — rehabilitation centers, breeding and training facilities. See flexible therapy belts.
4. Sanctuaries and cages: full-body, walk-in coverage
Cage and sanctuary-style systems provide full-body light coverage in an enclosure. They use wider spectra (for example 630–850nm) and durable metal construction, built for veterinary clinics, boarding facilities and rehabilitation centers rather than home use. See pet light therapy sanctuaries & cages.
5. Handheld devices: targeted positioning
Handheld units are positioned by hand during use — useful for small areas, spot application, or animals that do not tolerate wraps. They occupy a different role from fixed devices and often complement a belt or mat in the same product line. The HSY-HTP1660 is a current example of this format.
Technical decisions behind a pet product
- Wavelength: 660nm + 850nm is the standard pairing; cage systems sometimes span 630–850nm
- Power: matched to the format — daily-use mats at moderate output, professional belts and clinic systems at higher power
- Fastening and fit: sizing across breeds is the most common customization request
- Textiles and cleaning: covers and materials that withstand regular cleaning matter in clinic channels
- Controls: timers and multi-mode adjustment suit owner-operated products; clinics often ask for simpler, higher-power operation
Where to start
Most brands start with one format, validate the market, then extend the line. A common sequence: mat or wrap first (broad appeal, simple use), belts second (professional channel), cage systems for clinic-oriented ranges. MOQ and lead times for pet devices follow the same structure as our other product lines — samples at 1–2 units, market trial at 10–50, bulk at 100+.
